LEWD DEWDZ - UPCOMING 7" SNEAK PREVIEW

Shameless self promotion I suppose, but in January I did a REVIEW of Lewd Dewdz "Tape". About two months ago I started playing bass in the band and now we are a 5 piece and the sound is HUGE! Recently we just finished recording 4 songs for an upcoming split 7" with local ragers BEARDAGE that should be out in the next couple months! For your listening pleasure I have posted two tracks from the LEWD DEWDZ side, entitled "Floating Brain" and "Fuck You, I'm Drinking". ENJOY!

KDC-...good mourning

KDC give hope to modern day hardcore. It's not because they are Puerto Ricans, its because they are that fucking good! They bring something different to a scene of expected breakdowns and over emphasized gang vocals.  Recorded in Yauco, Puerto Rico and now out of print; "...good mourning" is an excellent package in 7 songs of pure honesty and aggression.  You can tell what this record meant to these guys and can feel the emotions play out, so take a listen!

CLOUD RAT - CLOUD RAT LP

It's been a dog's age since I posted to this blip caught up in 'the wave' that all you internet surfers are currently riding, maybe I will start posting more, who knows. Nothing has caught my eye in a while, but this was a must. I got added to a show last minute yesterday and ended up opening for these Mount Pleasant, Michigan bangers.

Cloud Rat is a three piece comprising of vocals, guitar and drums. I dont really have anything else to say other than they bring energy and fun to the show, but wow this band is heavy as fuck. Melodic riffs, grinding blast beats, atmospheric doom...this band keeps it really fucking interesting. Dont sleep on this shit!

Blood Ceremony releases it's second effort and moves towards a much doomier sound as opposed to the classic, heavy prog. feel that was included in the groups self-titled release. If you enjoyed the first record as much as I did, this will be a nice follow up.

Old Mayor - Old Mayor EP

Brighton, UK's Old Mayor formed in 2005.  A two piece sludge act that instantly caught my attention on the first listen.  Songs on this EP go from an eerie, creepy ambiance to an almost hellish sounding sludge metal with piercing screams and heavy, distorted guitars.  Old Mayor does a great job keeping it simple but allowing each song to be its own and interesting.  The riffs are menacing and the drum fills are thunderous. I dont know too much else about these guys but I am definitely looking forward to seeing what they have in store for the future, as should you.

HOAX - Demo 2010

Hoax are a band that recently formed in western Massachusetts that display the uglier, darker side of hardcore that I love most. It's direct, it's mean and it gives you nothing pretty or sincere in return for the straight-forward blend of music they deliver to the listener.  I just recently stumbled across this band from a post on a blog I frequent called I Could Die Tomorrow.  "Living On The Brink of Suicide," the final track on this demo, is  a song I can relate to during this cold, bleak winter that just doesn't seem to end here in western New York.  I highly recommend this record to the person that has been looking for a break but gets the door to the face. I recommend this to those who's nights drag on longer than the days without any salvation. Stick in there and take a listen, people can relate.

Lewd Dewdz - Tape

Coming off the press as fresh as a double order of chicken wings (suicidal w/ extra blue cheese!) comes Lewd Dewdz, soon to be a Buffalo, NY favorite in the underground punk scene. These six songs were just recently recorded to 8 track with the help of Eric Foster (Trystero, Robot Has Werewolf Hand) at The Funeral Home; an old funeral home (who woulda thought?) converted venue/punk house!  Maxing out at a little under ten minutes, Lewd Dewdz "Tape" flows very nicely! Vocalist Ben Barbour delivers witty angst in his straight forward vocal approach. Aaron Adkins lays down the "sic" riffage and leads while Joey Simmen (bass) and John Anderson (drums) hold down the rhythm section quite well!  This is an enjoyable tape to sit around, get fucked and plan a world domination to! Any parties looking to book Lewd Dewdz, send them love or hate mail here: lewddewdz@yahoo.com

Bad Brains - Rock For Light

If I could write everything I wanted to about the Bad Brains I would, but it would be a novel...BUT the story is that interesting, so check it here. Bad Brains destroyed punk rock. At least "Rock For Light" and the "S/T" releases, which have inspired famous artists from Mos Def and the Beastie Boys to countless others around the world. Ric Ocasek really got the intensity that Bad Brains broadcast on this record. A former jazz fusion turned punk rock/reggae act, to me this record is the pinnacle of the fire the Bad Brains created together. From loved reggae tunes like "I and I Survive" to more rocking "Banned In DC", this record is great for getting out of a winter time slump! Bring on the sunshine!

Nadja - Desire In Uneasiness

Nadja is a two piece that creates HUGE waves of ambient doom.  Forming in Toronto, Ontario,  Leah Buckareff and Aidan Baker have put out over 10 full-lengths together, as well as countless EP's, splits and solo recordings!  I instantly fell in love with this record as soon as "Disambiguation" faded in! Nadja creates a mysterious yet laid back atmosphere with "Desire In Uneasiness," but at the same time keeps it extremely heavy...you be the judge.

Napalm Death - Hatred Surge

"Hatred Surge" is the 5th demo released from Birmingham, Englands Napalm Death.  After this release in 1985, Napalm Death focused on creating a more extreme sound that would change the dynamic of the band and the sound of metal at the time.  This recording is unforgiving to the ears, a sonic assault from squealing guitar feedback and riffs to primal, monstrous barks echoing for what seems to be eternity!  This recording would be my soundtrack to the apocalypse, taking the listener on a one way ticket to the underworld...and Justin Broadrick, what else do you need?

Napalm Death - Hatred Surge

Spider's Last Moment (Indonesia)

This is a special post for my friend Wiman Rizkidarajat, who currently sings across the sea in Yogyakarta, Indonesia band, Spider's Last Moment.  Yogyakarta has a huge arts scene and caters to the city one of the nations most prestigious universities. This is apparent when listening to these two mp3's as each member of SLM display's excellent musicianship!  From blistering blast beats to straight forward riffage that carries into post rock and mathy breakdowns, this band definitely keeps it's options open.  Fans of Between the Buried and Me will find lots of interest in this!  Definitely interested to see what Spider's Last Moment has in store for 2011...until then lets hope for something soon!

Kylesa - Kylesa

Kylesa, taken from the name Kilesa Mara (Buddhist term denoting delusory mental states), formed in 2002 in Savannah, Georgia.  The approach of this band is what separates them from the rest in the doom/sludge scene.  Never settling for one particular genre, Kylesa does a great job of mixing psychedelia with heavy down tuned guitar, keeping the music open and limitless.  On top of this, Kylesa carries out its vocal attack with three singers, but primarily with guitar players Laura Pleasants and Philip Cope, who also carries out the bands studio production duties (as well as for Baroness, Blacktusk, etc,).  This is the Savannah natives debut record, with cover artwork from the infamous Pushead. Since this recording they having recruited a second drummer which adds for a more of a tribal feel. Kylesa's self titled effort is a must have!

Jónsi & Alex - Riceboy Sleeps

"Riceboy Sleeps" is a collaboration between Jónsi Birgisson of Sigur Ros fame and partner Alex Somers of Parachutes. Prior to this release, Birgisson and Somers went under the moniker Riceboy Sleeps, collaborating in multiple visual arts projects and having even released a picture book together!  Going under their own names for their debut release; "Riceboy Sleeps" hosts 9 beautifully illustrative and imaginative soundscapes.  Recorded in Iceland, Jónsi & Alex have met once again with long time collaboraters and all female string quartet, Amiina, as well as the Kópavogsdætur choir to create something so uplifting yet slightly melancholic at times. This is the perfect record to relax and reflect on, I will be looking forward to more releases in the future!

Bibio - FI

Wolverhampton, England is a a sister city to my hometown Buffalo, NY; both of which prospered economically during the Industrial Revolution. Maybe this is the reason why I felt instantly connected with Stephen James Wilkinson's outfit, Bibio.  Released in 2004, "FI" is a journey to your past...beautiful folk layered guitar resting on ambient samples and warm field recordings. Sometimes I forget that I'm not actually listening to this on tape because Bibio does a fantastic job with the analog production, capturing the warmth and nostalgic feeling this release brings to the listener.

Reprobates - Stress EP

Toronto, Ontario in the past 10 years has made huge waves in the punk/hardcore scene with such acts as Career Suicide, Fucked Up, Terminal State, among many others!  A couple years ago, while on a trip to Toronto, I entered a bar in the College district absolutely wasted and stumbled upon a punk show.  The show wasn't bad, but little did I know what I was in for with the headliners of the night, Reprobates.  As soon as they went on, it  was an all out assault of fierce punk/hardcore.  Gabby's guitar picking was ferociously fast, while Shawn's vocals followed suit with the sound of a man that clearly has lost his mind. As the set continued, bodies were being flipped and thrown everywhere! Before I could comprehend all this madness that was happening in front of me, the band stopped and the show was over.  For all I know, this is the only release Reprobates ever put out (with No Way Records); but at a little under 9 minutes, this is one of the angriest, best punk records I have heard in a long while.

Reprobates - Stress EP

Greenhouse Effect - Life Sentences

Greenhouse Effects best record in my opinion and also one of my favorite hop hop records out there! Every song on this record is  absolutely unique to the next! Inkwel, Manifest and Blueprint feed your ears honest and respectable lyrical spits straight from the heart and the warm beats that take you back to the dog days of summer with a very laid back sound.  FOR FANS OF TRUE HIP HOP!! Since this recording Greenhouse has put out a couple new releases, but Blueprint remains as the lone member of the group.

Grief - ...And Man Will Become Hunted

Grief was founded in 1991 by Terry Savastano and drummer Randy Odierno of crust band Disrupt. Grief’s sludgy brought extremely slow riffs to the underground. The band was heavily influenced by Black Sabbath, Eyehategod and warriors Saint Vitus. Grief’s music was jagged, noisy, harsh and brutally dissonant. Lead singer Jeff Hayward favored the sort of tortured, throat-shredding, screaming vocals that were quite common in /black metal and grindcore, and that risk-taking combination of torturous vocals and slow, Sabbath-influenced riffs made Grief one of the more influential / bands to emerge in the early ‘90s.

Dove - Dove

Hailing from Miami, Florida's sludge/doom scene comes Dove! Fronted by Henry Wilson (ex. FLOOR, CAVITY), the listener can expect much of the same down tempo and thick "wall of guitar" sound that made past ventures so popular; but this time around with hints of hardcore, hard rock and occasional spaced out leads that make you either head bang or feel stuck to your seat. Other than a 7" split w/ FLOOR, this is Dove's only available full length. A limited repress of the record was made available for FLOOR's reunion shows in 2010, but having been defunct for some years, don't expect anything from Dove soon.  Currently Henry is working on his new project, House of Lightning, until then, this record will see a lot of rotation.
